The distinctive imagery in Sophie MacCarthy’s slip-painted earthenware ceramics is drawn predominantly from the natural world. Scatter and flow, rhythm and movement are constant sources of inspiration along with a bold and joyous approach to colour. All the work is thrown and finely turned. Coloured slips are then applied with brushes on to the dry clay surface, often overlapping to create tonal depth. Stencils and wax-resist are applied, and the design is composed and built up slowly over many hours. Clear glazed and fired to Earthenware 1120 degrees.
